What you are about to see on this page are boxes I have made. If you are interested, another one very similar can be hand built for you . The interiors can be customized to suit your own preference. Keep in mind that each box is individually handmade. I do not mass produce these boxes, each one is unique.

"Most all of my boxes are trimmed in Gabon Ebony or Maccassar Ebony. It is the style I have chosen. It gives the box I think, a very rich and attractive look. Ebony is becoming very difficult to get , and when you do it is extremely expensive. The laminating and trimming takes more time to do and is probably why a lot of box makers stay clear of this procedure. The finish is very important to me, some say I am too fussy, but I say you can not be too fussy. I start by rough sanding with 120 grit then move to 220 then 400 then 600. Depending on the wood this is usually enough. Then I start the oil process up to five coats, then the wax, all done by hand. This finish usually take's a week to complete. I have used a spray shellac but I do not like the final results.

It has become increasingly more difficult to find a fine handcrafted product in today's faux quality, mass-produced society. It is all too common for large manufacturers to proclaim handmade simply because the product came into human contact as it rolled down the assembly line. Don truly feels that a craftsman applies his or her knowledge and experience into every individual detail to create a piece that is an elegant work of superior craftsmanship. A true craftsman will tediously sort over every aspect of the project from start to finish, from taking that extra time to hand select the raw materials, too using a magnifying glass on the finished product to see any imperfections there might be. For the craftsman knows that if the light shines on his project just right, that missed scratch is sure to show up.

Taking care of your investment :

Regular dusting with a lint free soft cloth can keep your jewelry box looking new. Cheesecloth works very well. Believe it or not, do not use feather dusters, as these may scratch the surface. Because the surface is waxed.

If the wood appears dull or dry, try rubbing a small amount of a good bees wax (Bri-Wax natural is used on D.W.F. boxes) or other wood furniture polish into the surface with a soft paper towel, dry cloth, or cheese cloth. Do not let excess oil or wax sit on the surface.

Do not place your box in direct sunlight, as this may discolour the wood. Avoid extreme changes in heat and humidity which may warp the wood. Do not submerge in water, and quickly wipe off any water that may accidentally touch the wood. Do not use abrasive cleaners or any other cleaner not made for wood products.

All D.W.F. Jewelry Boxes are oil and wax finishes. Small scratches can be buffed out using the finest grade (0000) steel wool or 1000-1500 grit sand paper and gently rubbing with the grain, then applying oil or wax , or both if desired. If you do decide to oil the box, it's best to let is sit for about 72hrs before applying your wax.
